My most successful project was the clay project. I used grey clay and acrylic paints. I created this project using sharp lines and a range of colors. While sculpting this piece payed attention to the texture to make sure that it was smooth, as well as bumpy in a few areas. I layered my clay to make my pickles look as realistic as possible I took extra clay and applied it to my base to create seeds. I used a ball stylus tool to create a rough exterior for the pickle. After my clay was fired in the kiln i applied a yellow wash to help the acrylic paint not soak into the clay. I used different shades of green for this piece. I used a dark green for the outer layer of the pickle i then painted a slightly lighter color for the main color. For the seeds i used a very light green that was almost yellow. After they were dry i sprayed clear gloss on then to make the pickles appear slick and wet as if they were just out of a jar. All of these techniques combined together into one cohesive piece really added to how really the clay looked. The most beneficial mini activities was definitely the color wheel and the shades and tint scales. Doing the color wheel allowed me to learn how to mix the primary colors to make any color you could possibly need. This helped a lot when painting because before this class I would just buy every color i would need. now with this new skill i can buy the primary colors and get an even bigger range of colors. The vale chart was also very helpful I learned that you can make a variety of shades and tints by adding black or white which gives you more color options when painting. I feel that with these mini activities i was well prepared for painting. I was able to create many pieces using these skills. Jack’s clay food project was by far the best clay project in the class. Though he did not focus on the food itself the hand he made to hold it had extraordinary detail. He showed every vein and muscle that would be on a real had. Jack wanted to use watercolor to paint this project but Mrs. Rossi said he had to use acrylic. Jack used this material that he was not familiar with and created lots of depth with it. He also used glaze for the popsicle to give it that frozen glossy look. Everyone in the class thought his idea to make a hand was crazy but he said he could do it. He exceeded everyone's expectations and went above and beyond.
